Yeah, It Gets Cold in Florida

I planned on writing my fist blog about when and how I started fly fishing. However, I went fly fishing today and froze for several hours so I’m not feeling that it’s the right time for it.

Believe it or not, it does get really cold here in Destin, Florida. For the last 10 days we have had clouds and light rain with the temperature in the 60’s to mid 70’s, which is very typical for our winters down here.

Last night we where hit with a cold front that trickled down from the midwest, dropping our temperatures all the way down to 30 degrees! I think I can safely speak for most Floridians that any temps bellow 50 is freezing for us. Typically we will only get a day or two of sun, which today is predicted to be that last day of sun then it transforms back it to clouds, rain, and winds; these cold fronts move out just as fast as they arrived.

Destin, Florida Beach Redfish…

Destin, Florida Beach Redfish…

Being that today was going to be my only shot of getting out on the beach and chasing a few redfish, of course I had to take it… but I waited until the early afternoon were temps were in the high 40’s / low 50s.

The beaches in this area are world class and with north winds laying the water banks down in make for great place to fish, winter temps kill all the algae making for great sighting fishing.

I bundle up, hop in the boat to a quick spot out the Destin pass, when I got the beach I dropped the trolling motor and proceeded to crawl down the beach and before my fingertips got too cold and I couldn’t hold on the my fly line or feel, I was able to find a school beautiful Destin, Florida Redfish cruising up and down the beach.

I quietly and methodically got in position made my first cast with no such luck. However because of my positioning, I was able to make 2 more casts and on third attempt I hooked up and landed a beautiful Redfish.
